4 Reasons to Make 2026 the Year You Invest in a Fence

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, you have to picket your battles. But we think a new fence should be at the top of the list. You know the obvious benefits of residential fencing: privacy, security, and curb appeal. But if those details haven’t already tipped the scales, you may need a final nudge to bump you in the right direction. Keep these lesser-known benefits in mind as you weigh the pros and cons: #1: Clearly Defining Your Property Lines Your property lines are the boundary points that show where your land begins and ends. Metal rods or stakes sometimes mark these boundaries, but this rarely happens. Unmarked property lines can cause problems with neighbors.   Adding a fence to your lot is one way to settle these unpleasantries once and for all. Beforehand, your contractor will determine the boundaries of your property by: This information will come in handy when it’s time to plan and install the new structure. It also helps in settling any disputes that may arise in the future. Odds are, you’ve asked yourself these kinds of questions and more during your time as a homeowner: Answering these questions can sometimes be tricky. That’s why you should get an official property line survey before moving forward with your project. That way, you can be sure your line estimates are accurate. And that you stay on the right side of the law when building your new fence.  In most places in Ohio, you can build your fence right up against your property line. Some local towns have rules that require 3 feet of space between the line and fence.  Thankfully, it’s not hard to schedule an appointment with a professional surveyor. Simply visit the website for the Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio. You can use their helpful database to find a surveyor near you.  #2: Increasing Your Property Value One of the most asked questions we hear from clients is this:  “Does a fence add value to a home?”  People disagree on how a fence affects property value. But we can tell you from experience that it does make a difference when it comes time to sell your home. A new fence conveys to buyers that your home is well-cared for, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here are some other major selling points to consider: Fences Provide a Safe Space for Pets and ChildrenDo you live in a neighborhood that attracts families with young children and/or pets? Then a fence becomes a huge selling factor. Parents and pet owners are more likely to purchase homes with safe play areas. So a fence could be the difference between selling your home and having it sit on the market.  Fences Boost a Home’s Curb AppealThe right fence will make your home even more beautiful and appealing than it already is. For a natural and timeless look, we recommend gorgeous cedar fence pickets and posts. Although, vinyl and aluminum fences can be just as striking!  Fences Increase Home SecurityFences have proven to be deterrents to trespassers and intruders. They also serve as effective mounts for home security systems. In today’s market, homes with built-in security have a higher resale value than those without! These factors combined mean your home is more likely to sell quickly and at a fair price if you invest in a fence. You may be about to list or just want to keep resale value in mind for the future. Either way, a new fence is a wise investment.  #3: Deterring the Spreading of Weeds We’d all like to avoid stubborn weeds. But all the preventative care in the world won’t matter when you live downwind from a weed-ridden lawn. Most experts suggest that you invest in some kind of barrier to stop the spread.  You can try to deter weeds through an underground steel or plastic edging system. Or, you can plant a row of hedges and hope they’ll prove effective. For a reliable deterrent, install a tall vinyl or cedar fence. They are a good investment for security.  Weed seeds can travel far and high on windy days. So your best bet is to build a strong barrier that you know will stand the test of time.  Keep in mind that a fence won’t totally eliminate the risk of weeds. But if a neighboring property is contributing to the problem, a privacy fence is a great way to limit the spread. If the problem continues to persist, it may be time to speak with a landscaper about what’s going on. #4: Reducing Noise Your yard should be a peaceful oasis. But if there’s nothing between you and a neighboring street, park, or business, that may not ring true. While a privacy fence won’t eliminate noise entirely, it can make a notable difference. If noise reduction is a top priority for you, here are a few tips to ensure that the final product gets the job done: Above all, ensure that you choose a fencing contractor who can get the job done right. The more solid and sturdy the final structure is, the better it will be at reducing noise. Let’s Make 2026 Your Year for a New Fence! Needless to say, there are countless reasons to invest in a new fence. They’re beautiful, functional, and secure. They also help to settle neighbor disputes, improve resale value, keep weeds out, and maintain peace and quiet. So if you’ve been holding off, we say there’s no time like the present.  Ready for 2026 to be the year your home becomes the fenceiest on the block? Talk to a contractor about your specific needs and request a free estimate. Then, get ready to reap all the benefits we’ve discussed in this article . . . and then some!

Dissecting Your Fence Estimate | 3 Factors That Play a Role

Mae Fence knows the importance of the bottom line; which is why we offer free estimates on every project. Although a new fence has the power to transform a property, it’s also a big investment. That’s why we strive to be clear and upfront with our pricing from the word “go.” With that in mind, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about what goes into a fence estimate. Here are the top 3 factors that play a role.  #1: Materials In our shop, we fabricate and manufacture all our products. This allows us to cut out the middleman and lower costs. Of course, the materials used for your new fence will affect the projected price tag.  We install cedar, vinyl, aluminum, and chain-link fencing. And each of these product types is in its own price category. Any add-on features will further affect the equation of the final cost of a fence.  Here is a general overview of what you can expect, cost-wise, based on the type of fence you choose: Cedar FencingTake a look at our cedar fence photo gallery . . . notice the gorgeous coloring, natural aesthetic, and sturdy appearance of these structures. You may believe these details make cedar an expensive choice. It’s not.  Cedar is actually one of the most cost-effective materials on this list. Plus, it’s durable and low-maintenance, so you won’t have to worry about extra costs down the road either.  Vinyl FencingVinyl fences are more expensive than their wood counterparts. But they also come with a longer life expectancy! Vinyl is strong, requires little maintenance, and offers a range of design possibilities. If you have a little wiggle room in the budget, it’s an excellent choice for your new fence.  Aluminum FencingRegal, sturdy, and environmentally friendly. Aluminum should be one of the most expensive options on our list, right? Wrong!  Aluminum is as beautiful as classic wrought iron fencing but comes at a fraction of the cost. Plus, these fences last for decades with minimal maintenance. Looking for a gorgeous, stately, and budget-friendly structure? You can’t go wrong with aluminum fencing.  Chain-link FencingMae Fence offers chain-link fencing for our commercial clients. It’s a great option for business owners because it’s both versatile and affordable. It’s not the prettiest option on the list, but it’s an affordable choice when you’re working with a large area.  Add-onsAfter choosing your material, you may opt for various add-on features. These details will affect the final cost of the project. For example, drive gates and lattices will all increase your materials costs.  #2: Terrain On top of the price of materials, we’ll need to figure in the cost of labor. We can’t do that without a general understanding of the terrain. As you might imagine, certain landscapes are easier to build on than others. Here are a few more complicated conditions that can increase the cost of your project: HillsIs the project site located at the top of a hill? That could affect your price tag. The harder it is to reach a location, the more it will cost to transport materials and complete the project.  SlopesIf your property consists of more than flat surfaces, you can expect that to impact the final budget. Keep in mind that sloped landscapes will also affect the type of materials available. This will again impact your estimate. Racked or straight fences are ideal for sloped yards. Sand and/or RocksA key installation step is the digging of holes to install and fortify posts. If the soil on your property is sandy or rocky, this step becomes much more difficult. It will take our team extra time to remove rocks or account for sandy ground. The projected cost may increase as a result.  #3: Length It may go without saying, but one of the most important factors to consider is the size of the project. The specifications of your fence will dramatically impact its final cost. That’s why our team will be careful to measure your property beforehand. We want to understand the required heights and lengths before creating an estimate.  The Importance of Your Free Fence Estimate Your free estimate will not be an exact projection of your future costs. But it can be a great way to get your feet underneath you as you consider your options.  At Mae Fence, we’ve been crafting estimates for as long as we’ve been building fences. We have lots of experience weighing the important factors (materials, terrain, and length) to create an accurate estimate for your project. To learn more or request your free fence estimate, click here.  Remember, fences aren’t planned and built overnight. They must be carefully considered and planned for, from both your side and ours. A free estimate gives both sides information so we can enter an agreement on the same page. And there’s nothing better than a win-win scenario!

How to Care for Your New Cedar Fence

Of all the many fencing materials on the market today, cedar is one that we are particularly fond of. It’s beautiful, it’s affordable, it smells fantastic, and—most importantly—it’s durable. So durable, in fact, that it requires virtually no maintenance. That’s right: so long as you don’t mind the natural gray or silky appearance of seasoned cedar, there’s no extra measures you have to take to make your new fence last longer.  But if you’d like to hold on to the beautiful red tint of your new cedar fence, we’ve got good news. There are simple steps you can take to preserve that eye-catching color for years to come. Here’s what we recommend. Knowing What to Expect from Your Cedar Fence Cedar is naturally durable and our materials are among the best the industry offers. But as time goes by, you can expect some changes to this organic product.  For example, some natural shrinking and swelling may occur as your fence adapts to its environment. This is perfectly normal and is not cause for concern.  Seasoned cedar is also prone to natural graying. Again, this is not a problem and will not affect the life expectancy of your new fence. So long as you are not overly hard on or abusive to the product, there is nothing you need to do to ensure it continues to stand tall for years to come.  With that in mind, we’ve outlined the following tips to simply assist you in keeping your fence looking shiny and new. If you appreciate the silky gray appearance of a seasoned fence, there are no maintenance tasks you need to worry about!  Cleaning Your Cedar Fence To keep up the appearance of your cedar fence, you should give it a quick cleaning about once a year. There are several different ways you can tackle the job. Here are a few options to consider: When you’re cleaning your cedar fence, it’s always best to err on the side of soft, non-chemical cleaning solutions. Any of the options we’ve listed above will help you avoid splintering or damaging the wood.  Sealing Your Cedar Fence There is no end to products you can use to seal and stain your cedar fence. But in our nearly 100 years of business, we’ve learned that some products are vastly superior to others. If you’re hoping to keep your cedar fence looking brand new for years, we recommend that you follow these sealing and staining guidelines: Remember, adding a stain to your fence won’t make it last any longer. But it will keep it looking new for longer. If that’s your goal, we recommend you apply a new coat of wood stain every three to five years.  Enjoying Your Cedar Fence for Many More Years Again, maintaining a cedar structure is only necessary for those who want to hold onto the beautiful look of a new fence. No matter what you do (or don’t do) you can plan on enjoying your investment for many years to come.  And if you do want to keep the red hue of your beautiful cedar fence? Thankfully, that’s pretty easy too. By occasionally inspecting, cleaning, and sealing your fence, you’ll make sure it continues to look brand new.

Beyond String Lights: Other Ways to Get Your Fence Holiday Ready

Looking to break the status quo this Christmas? There are countless ways to decorate your home’s exterior without the use of string lights.  Garlands and ornaments and wreaths, oh my! If string lights aren’t your thing, there are dozens of other ways to get your fence ready for the holidays. But a beautifully decorated fence doesn’t happen overnight. Keep reading for an overview of our favorite fence-safe decorations . . . and how we recommend you tackle the project.  First, Choose Your Adornments The options are virtually endless. So you’ll want to begin the process by choosing your decorative materials.  The most popular choice on the holiday market is the hugely versatile string light. But if you want to think outside the box this Christmas, there’s more to consider. Here are our best fence-safe recommendations. For Cedar Fences: Garlands and Wreaths  Cedar fences are natural and rustic in appearance. For homeowners who are fans of this aesthetic, rustic garlands and wreaths are an attractive choice.  Garlands and wreaths look great on most fence styles and are generally safe for all fencing materials. But they’re especially striking on red cedar fences. The greenery makes a bright contrast to the wood by day. And you can wrap the garlands in lights so they continue to stand out by night.  Use your fence’s taller posts as anchors from which to string the garlands and hang the wreaths. Install these decorations with plastic clips or cable ties; do not use any anchors which require the use of screws because these can damage the fence.  Vinyl Fences: Inflatables and Figurines  Owners of vinyl fences usually prefer a fun and modern vibe. That’s why we recommend inflatables and figurines for this fence type in particular. Reindeer, snowmen, The Grinch, and other fun holiday figures are a great way to adorn your fence and showcase your family’s festive personality. Stake these figurines into the ground along the base of your fence in whichever locations are most seen by passersby. Or, use cable ties, plastic clips, or other fence-safe adhesives to install your decorations along the top of the fence. Either way, inflatables and/or light-up figurines are a fun way to make your fence stand out.  Aluminum Fences: Bows and Ornaments Aluminum fences are understated, classic, and elegant. If you want your Christmas decor to make a similar impression, there’s no better choice than a few thoughtfully placed bows and ornaments. We believe that bigger is always better. But when it comes to exterior bows and ornaments, there is a range of sizes from which to choose. Opt for elegant silvers or festive reds and greens. Either way, your bows and ornaments will be the perfect adornment for your classic metal fence. (Just remember to use fence-safe adhesives and clips when hanging your decorations!) Next, Make a Plan At Mae Fence, we love it when a plan comes together. This is especially true during the notoriously chaotic holiday season. So if you’re hoping to add fence decorating to your ever-growing to-do list, we think the only way forward is with a thoughtful plan.   You’ve already chosen your decorative materials. Make sure your plan also includes: Once you have a plan in place, you’ll know exactly what needs to happen next. And you’ll hopefully avoid any Christmas Vacation-style disasters! Then, Prep Your Space Of course, the final objective is a stunning and envy-inducing fence. But you also want to avoid damaging the structure in the process. With this in mind, we recommend you prep your space beforehand to ensure there are no lasting effects on your fence. Be sure to: Keep in mind that holiday decorations can sometimes make a bad situation worse. For example, figurines, inflatables, ornaments, or other installations may create ice or snow dams. When that happens, be sure to clear the ice and snow away or remove the decorations entirely. A little holiday cheer is not worth causing permanent damage to your fence.  Finally, Revel in Your Neighbors’ Envy Christmas won’t come until your home outshines every other house on the block, Clark!  (We’re kidding. Mostly.) Of course, fence decorating is not a holiday requirement or even a right of passage. But if you do decide to adorn your gorgeous outdoor structures with garlands, figurines, or ornaments, we hope you’ll follow our advice and do so safely.

5 Reasons to Choose Cedar for Your New Fence

If you’ve been on the fence about which material to choose for the new addition to your property, we hear you. There are several great options to consider, including wood, vinyl, and aluminum.  Honestly, you’d be just fine with any one of these materials. The question is, how do you know which product is best for your project? When you’re weighing your options, there are a lot of factors that come into play. Aesthetics, longevity of materials, and cost are a few details you’re probably considering.  In our experience, cedar fencing is a product that tends to check all of these boxes. Here are five reasons why we believe a new cedar fence is always the right call.  #1 – Cedar Is Beautiful There’s nothing quite like the pink-red hue of a new cedar fence. It’s somehow both timeless and modern. No matter the size, design, color, or age of your home, a cedar fence will look as though it were always meant to be there.   And that’s not to mention the sweet aroma of cedar. Many homeowners find that the warm smell of a new cedar fence is the final detail that turns their backyard into the place everyone wants to be. It’s an intangible feature, sure. But it’s one that transforms an outdoor space into a rustic haven. Plus, cedar fencing is extremely versatile. In our shop, we’re able to cut cedar slats into virtually any shape. Some of the more popular requests we get include gothic, flat-top, and picket cuts. These details allow homeowners to tailor their new fence to meet any design vision they might have. #2 – Cedar Is Durable Wood fencing has long been a preferred choice for homeowners. But not all wood fences are created equal. In our shop, you’ll find that cedar fencing is the only wood fabrication we offer. Why? Because it stands head and shoulders—or cap and posts, if you will—above the rest.  Unlike other wood fences, cedar won’t bow or twist. Because of the natural oils inherent in the wood, cedar is also insect resistant. Those same oils, called polyoxyphenols, are what create the distinctive aroma of cedar. They also have the added benefit of preventing rotting. To recap, cedar fences are less likely to bow, twist, rot, or attract insects. Are you sold yet? #3 – Cedar Is Full of Historic Charm Believe it or not, cedar has been used as a building material across the world for thousands of years. The Egyptians used cedar to fabricate their temples. The Greeks used it for roofing, siding, and furniture. Even the Native Americans were historically fond of cedar.  Why?  Because it grows straight and firm, it’s durable, and it’s stunning. So it came as no surprise when cedar fencing became popular in the 1950s. And it’s no surprise that it’s remained popular ever since.  All this is to say: cedar slats have been used in fencing for generations. So if you’re drawn to an aesthetic that is timeless and historic, cedar fencing is your best option. #4 – Cedar Is Virtually Maintenance Free We like to make it clear to our customers that cedar fencing does not require any maintenance. Staining or painting your cedar fence will preserve the appearance of your investment, but it won’t lengthen the life of your fence in any way. Again, cedar is naturally very hardy. That said, if you aren’t drawn to the look of graying or faded wood, we do recommend you follow some basic maintenance steps. Primarily, you’ll want to apply a new coat of solid or semi-transparent stain every three to five years. But again, doing so won’t make the fence more resistant to rot. The material does that on its own.  #5 – Cedar Is Affordable The affordability of cedar is something that’s often a bit of a surprise to people. Because a cedar fence is stunning, functional, and resilient, it feels like it should be one of the more expensive options on the market. Right? Actually, no. Cedar fencing is a practical and affordable option for homeowners shopping for a new fence. The up-front cost of a new cedar fence is remarkably reasonable; plus, the end product is durable and low maintenance (as we mentioned). This makes the overall investment a pretty economical one.  Let’s Get Started If you’ve been going back and forth about whether a cedar fence is right for your project, we hope to have settled the issue. Cedar is beautiful, durable, historically popular, low maintenance, and affordable. In other words, it’s the right choice.

Fence Installation: How to Work Around an Existing Irrigation System

Is your yard already equipped with an irrigation system? That’s great news for your grass, plants, and garden boxes. But it could mean trouble when installing a new fence.  Thankfully, it’s not hard to work around an irrigation system that is properly installed and found within your property lines. However, to ensure your project runs smoothly and successfully, there are a few steps you must take. Follow these guidelines as you prepare your property for the arrival of a fencing installation team: Know Where Your Irrigation Lines Run  Ideally, you will already have a general idea of where your sprinkler lines run. If you don’t, that’s okay.  To find the location of your irrigation lines, you can use one of the following techniques: Keep in mind that it’s not necessary for you to have a hard-and-fast understanding of where each line resides. So long as you are confident that the lines don’t cross over onto another property, it’s not likely that a fence installer will run into it.  Mark Your Sprinkler Heads To protect your sprinkler heads from being stepped on, broken, or interfered with, you should mark them before the installation team arrives. This is a fairly simple step and only requires you to purchase either spray paint or a staked flag for each head.  Circle each head with the spray paint or mark each spot with a flag. Either way, you’ll be informing the team about where those heads can be found.  Choose an Experienced Fencing Contractor Well-trained and experienced technicians know how to build a fence without interfering with an existing irrigation system. So, if you are confident that the lines were properly installed along the boundaries of your property, there should be nothing to worry about. Put your trust in the experts you’ve hired to install your new fence. Don’t Panic If an Irrigation Line Gets Hit If a sprinkler head or irrigation line does get nicked in the process of fence installation, don’t panic. Again, this will only happen if and when a system has been improperly installed.  Together, you and your contractor will be able to identify who is at fault—be it a neighbor or the sprinkler system installers. And that party should be held responsible for the damage. Thankfully, any damage that does occur should be relatively easy and inexpensive to resolve. If you find that you need to move an irrigation line, wait until after the fence has been installed. This will allow your fencing contractor to finish the project and be out of the way when the irrigation team arrives.  Ask Your Contractor What Else You Should Do If you still feel uneasy with the idea of having a fence installed around an irrigation system, call your fencing contractor. Any experienced installation team will be able to walk you through the process and provide you with advice specific to your situation. At Mae Fence, we do whatever we can to put our clients’ minds at ease and ensure a smooth installation. Because most projects require our installers to work around an existing sprinkler system, this is a task we’ve done hundreds and hundreds of times.  If you are willing to do a little work to prepare the site, there’s truly nothing you need to worry about. Just be ready to enjoy your beautiful new fence!  When You Can: Install Fence First, Irrigation System Second In a perfect world, we would all be able to install the fence first, add an irrigation system next, and lay the sod last. Of course, it doesn’t always work out that way…and that’s okay. As we mentioned, an experienced fencing contractor will be able to work around any existing setup you might have.  However, if you are able to install your fence before the irrigation system, there are a few bonuses that come along with that plan: Whether you are pre- or post-irrigation installation, adding a new fence to your property is always a good idea. And if you have concerns about the process, you can always call your contractor for peace of mind.

How to Get Approval for a Residential Fence in Ohio

The success of a community hinges upon its building codes and regulations. As complicated and inconvenient as those codes may be, they promote the safety and well-being of local residents.  If you are frustrated by all the hoops you must jump through to make your fence happen, we understand. But we hope you’ll keep in mind how important it is to follow your city’s building regulations to the letter—if only to avoid a hefty fine. To make the process as easy and streamlined as possible, we are happy to get approval for you for a small fee. If you’d rather do the work yourself, we’ve written up this easy-to-follow guide.  A Step-by-Step Guide to Approval The process for getting approval for a residential fence is specific to your city. Before starting, you’ll need to know some basic information about the scope of the proposed project.  Be ready to answer these kinds of questions: These are just a few examples of the information you will need to have in hand. You may also need to submit a copy of the site plan (or plat of survey), as drawn up by your contractor. Once you have these details in hand, you’ll be ready to start the process for approval.  Step One – Contact Your Local Building Department Every city has a local building department that is responsible for reviewing and approving building permits and plans. Your first step is to get in touch with the building department for your city to learn more about the permitting process.  Step Two – Fill Out a Fence Building Permit Application Next, you’ll need to visit the physical location of your city’s building department to fill out the permit application. You’ll also want to bring with you a copy of the site plan and a signed contract between you and your contractor.  Step Three – Wait for Approval Because residential fences are typically considered a smaller project, you should hear back from the building department within 1-3 business days. If you haven’t received a response by the end of that time frame, it’s worth giving the department a call to inquire about the status of your application. Step Four – File a Variance (If Needed) If your application is denied, don’t worry. Denials happen all the time and simply mean that your project proposal goes against the city’s code. Most often, the city is willing to make variances to the code to accommodate homeowners.  Again, this process will be unique to your city. Typically, you’ll need to submit an additional form along with a written letter explaining why you want the variance. Step Five – Schedule an Inspection with the City After your application has been approved, you’ll need to schedule an inspection with your city’s building department. This is to ensure that the property and project line up with the information you provided on the application. Step Six – Mark Your Underground Utility Lines Before your fencing contractor can get started on the project, you’ll need to have the Ohio Utility Protection Service come and mark your underground utility lines. Call 8-1-1 to get this service scheduled.  Step Seven – Make Sure to Get Approval from Your HOA  Don’t start building until you’ve obtained one last approval. If your HOA hasn’t signed off on the fence, now is the time to dot those i’s and cross those t’s. Again, this project will be unique to your community, but you don’t want to move forward until you’ve gotten HOA approval.  Step Eight – Leave the Rest to Your Contractor Now you can finally breathe a sigh of relief! You’ve taken all the necessary steps for getting approval for a residential fence and your contractor should be able to take over from here.

How to Childproof Your Outdoor Space

At Mae Fence, we believe that a backyard full of happy children is the true American dream. But without the proper safeguards, that idyllic scene can quickly turn into an accident-ridden nightmare. Fortunately, childproofing your outdoor space is a simple and straightforward project. Here’s what we recommend: #1: Be Diligent with Pest Control Outdoor critters, like squirrels, insects, and spiders, are drawn to wherever they can find shelter, food, and water. In other words, your scenic backyard is a literal oasis . . . to unwanted vermin. And while all pests are annoying, some are outright dangerous. To protect yourself, your pets, and (most importantly) your children, stay on top of your property’s pest control needs. After all, depending on where you live in Ohio, one or more of these dangerous species could make their way into your backyard: To protect your children, take the necessary steps to keep dangerous pests off your property. Start by keeping your outdoor area free from trash and debris as these attract pests. Next, get rid of standing water as it can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects. Finally, call an exterminator any time you suspect that you have a dangerous pest problem on your hands.  No one wants their outdoor space overrun with uninvited critters. Follow these tips to keep your children safe and, as added bonuses, you’ll protect your garden and home foundation at the same time. #2: Safely Store Your Garden Chemicals Speaking of protecting your garden . . .  As a homeowner, it’s your right to use pesticides, insecticides, and/or herbicides to keep your vegetation lush and verdant. That said, while these chemicals will repel or kill unwanted intruders, they can be dangerous to humans. If you have little ones roaming the backyard, make sure those harmful garden chemicals are safely stored away. To practice the safe use of garden chemicals: If you ever stumble upon an unmarked container, safely dispose of it and its contents. Do the same if you encounter an expired chemical or are unable to verify the age of the container. All of these steps will help to prevent chemical poisoning and keep your children safe. #3: Trim Your Trees Nobody appreciates a behemoth of a tree as much as we do. But the larger your tree gets, the more inherently dangerous it becomes. Without proper care, your gorgeous trees can cause: Bodily InjuryTree pruning strengthens the plant all the way down to its roots. As a result, it’s less likely to fall or drop branches on people. It also ensures twigs and branches aren’t hanging at eye level. So you won’t have to worry about your little ones getting scraped or injured when running nearby. Damage to PropertyEven if a falling tree branch doesn’t directly harm a person, it may still create a dangerous environment. Imagine, for example, if a branch were to land on a power line or come through a household window. Both scenarios could be disastrous for anyone standing nearby.  Thankfully, childproofing your backyard doesn’t require you to get rid of your established trees. If you have concerns, speak to an arborist or a tree trimming company about your backyard beauties. Often, a little trimming here and there will do the job.  Keep in mind that trimming is especially important when you notice these warning signs: Regular tree trimming will help you avoid a dangerous scenario. It will also help to maintain the beauty, health, and strength of your trees! #4: Install a Fence (Especially Around the Pool) After all is said and done, if you have children and want to boost the safety of your outdoor space, the best thing you can do is install a fence. Any fence will do, but you can read this article to discover which fence type we think is best for families with kids. What you need to know is all fences are proven security measures. They allow your children to safely play outdoors with a reduced risk of: If you have a pool, a safe fence is a virtual necessity. And in some communities, you are legally required to securely enclose your pool with a fence or barrier.  At Mae Fence, we believe that the safety of your home and family is invaluable. And that’s a big part of why we do what we do. To learn more about our privacy and security fence installation options, give us a call. Keep an Eye Out for Other Outdoor Danger Zones This list is meant as a starting point for childproofing your outdoor space. Once you’ve checked the above items off your to-do list, you should take a walk around your backyard and look for other danger zones that may pose a risk. Ask yourself: The backyard is where memories and magic are made. We hope you’ve found these suggestions helpful and that your outdoor space becomes a safe haven for your little loved ones.

Privacy Fences: The Why, the How, and Everything Else

If you’re considering a privacy fence, you might wonder what the project will actually entail and whether it’s the right decision for your home. Keep reading and we’ll cover all you need to know about the topic—including why privacy fences are a good idea, how you can make one happen, and everything in between. What You Might Not Know About Privacy Fences We’ll dive into some of the traditional motives for adding a privacy fence later on. But first, we want to tell you about a few of the lesser-known advantages these structures offer. If you’ve been going back and forth over the decision, these details could finally resolve the matter.   Privacy Fences Make Your Yard Feel Bigger Some homeowners worry that adding a fence to their yard will make the space feel smaller. In our experience, the opposite is true. A privacy fence creates the illusion of a larger yard by blocking sightlines and creating a defined boundary. The fence stands as a physical barrier between your space and the surrounding environment, which ultimately creates the feeling of seclusion and expansion. In our book, that’s a win-win.  Privacy Fences May Add to the Value of Your Home A privacy fence doesn’t always translate to a higher listing price. But it may be the difference between a home that sells quickly . . . and one that doesn’t.  Home buyers are drawn to properties with heightened curb appeal and security. So, over time, your investment could pay off in more ways than one. These are just a few of the ways a privacy fence can have an unexpected, but powerful, impact on your home and family. So if you’ve been waffling over the decision, make sure you keep these details in mind.  Other Reasons to Add a Privacy Fence Privacy fences are installed for a wide range of reasons—not the least of which is (you guessed it) privacy. But what does privacy look like for homeowners in Ohio? Here are a few things you can expect from the new structure: Heightened Isolation The best backyards offer a sense of peace and seclusion. A new fence will help you achieve exactly that.  If you want to shield your space from prying eyes, provide a sense of privacy, and prevent unwanted intrusions, these structures will get the job done. Even if you live in a busy or crowded neighborhood, a privacy fence has the power to make your outdoor oasis feel separate and exclusive to your family. Increased Security Home security has never been more important. And a privacy fence provides one more layer to a property’s overall safety.  That’s because fences are a proven deterrent to trespassers and intruders. They simply make it more difficult to access a property. So if you’re looking for a boost in safety and peace of mind, a shiny new fence could be the perfect solution.  Noise Reduction Are you tired of the near-constant noise pollution from neighboring yards, streets, and sidewalks? A privacy fence can help to minimize the impact and create a quieter and more tranquil environment within the confines of your property. Established Boundaries One of the most powerful benefits of a privacy fence is the opportunity to establish the lines of your property. If you deal with constant conflict and/or misunderstandings with neighbors, a privacy fence will finally put the issue to bed.  How to Add a Privacy Fence to Your Property You may be sold on the idea of a privacy fence, but are you ready for such a big undertaking? Like most construction projects, adding a home privacy fence requires some preparation and forethought. But after a little bit of leg work, you may be surprised at how easy it is to get the ball rolling in the right direction: These few steps will help to make sure you and the contractor are on the same page from start to finish. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your project runs smoothly and successfully.  Is It Time to Get the Process Started? At the end of the day, privacy fences aren’t for everyone.
